White River (Missouri & Arkansas) tailwater information is available online. For current generation and river flows, click on the dam information sites: Beaver Dam tailwater, Table Rock Dam tailwater (Lake Taneycomo), Bull Shoals tailwater, Norfork Dam tailwater, or Greers Ferry Dam (Little Red River). Automated voice reports are available for Beaver and Table Rock at 417-336-5083, for Bull Shoals and Norfork at 870-431-5311, and for Greers Ferry at 501-362-5150. Also, at about 6pm the day before, the following day's forecast of Southwest Power Dam Generation Schedules are posted. SWPA's forcasts are notoriously inaccurate, so take them with a rock of salt. Ozark Trout Streams. The US Geological Survey sites offer near real time stream height and in some cases, stream flow information for our favorite Ozark trout waters. The Current River Site only offers five years of averages on the height chart but you'll get a good idea of whether the river is too high to wade comfortably. The North Fork of the White River Site has real time height data but only has historical data for flows; I like the height at around three feet. The Niangua River Site is located well downstream from the trout water but has years' of flow statistics so you can estimate whether the trout water is normal, low, or high. The Maramec River site is located near Steelville and has an 80 year data average so you can tell if the water is abnormally low or high. The Eleven Point River Site is excellent. Look for 1.7 feet or higher but below flood stage for good fishing. Click on the USGS Missouri Sites to get an overview of all the available reporting stations. Missouri Trout Parks. The parks can be crowded on weekends and during the summer but you'll find the fishermen have adapted well. They'll let you in close and will accommodate your cast with theirs. On opening day the casting looks like synchronized swimming with everybody mending upstream at the same time. Even with a crowd you'll find a good fishing spot with some elbow room, particularly in the late afternoon. The rivers just outside the parks offer excellent, uncrowded fishing year round. The USGS takes measurements at the gauge house just below Bennett Spring, see Gauge House and at Roaring River State Park, see ROARING RIVER. Take a look at: Bennett Spring, Montauk, Roaring River, and Meramec. For even more links to Missouri trout fishing go to: www.missouritrout.com Countrywide Water Data. The USGS offers current and historical height and flow data for waters throughout the US. When you start planning your trip go to the USGS Site, select a state and get the water info you need. Topo Maps. These guys don't give me squat for a free plug but I use and like their products. If you like to explore get a map from Topozone. |
